On Group learning

Many times throughout a person's life, they are going to be required to work and learn with a team. Many people find that teams are not going to encourage an individual to actually retain the information that they are learning, however, that is false, as many studies have proven that there are some great benefits to learning in a team. First off, those that learn in a team are more than likely going to go deeper into a subject than they would otherwise normally do. And why is this? Consider an example of learning about ethical dilemmas, there are many members of a team and each member is going to have their own opinion. Thus, the person has more sides and views to look at which does help to increase their understanding of just why something is an ethical dilemma and just how the sides can look at the same problem.

Secondly, when learning in teams, each person is contributing and not only are they getting more information from the other students, but they are increasing their social and speaking skills that can be used later in life when they do get employment. Too many times, people are shy and inward and this is no way to be in any career field. With team learning, they are learning how to voice their opinions and judgments in a factual way that is not meant to offend, but is meant to help to educate someone on their opinion. These skills can be carried over into other aspects of life, which includes developing a stronger self-esteem. And this is something that studies have proven are very beneficial to female students.

Those that participate in team learning are going to find that they have less anxiety of material that they are learning since they are getting the chance to talk this over and look at all the angles with fellow classmates. Too many times it has been found that students do not talk as openly about the subjects that they are learning with teachers, when compared to classmates. Thus, one could argue that with team learning they are going more in-depth than they would otherwise be doing. This means learning the material in a way that they never would if it were not for team learning.

Team learning is also going to help to encourage a community for the students. This community is going to be the backbone of their education. And without the community factor there are many students that may feel as their success goes unrewarded or that they have to deal with too many factors that make their education not worth it in the end. Team learning is something that every teacher should be utilizing in their classroom in order to develop the student in a well-rounded way. Otherwise, they are not really doing their job of teaching a subject and its many facets to the students. Through team learning, students gather much more real world information than they could ever learn from sitting at a desk and staring at a book for hours on end.
